Evolution of a Criminal

Today I had the opportunity to view the documentary ‘Evolution of a Criminal’; a powerful message of moving beyond your past.  The 3rd Annual Black Star Film Festival in Philadelphia presented this film which included a Q&A with the author.  Spike Lee is the Executive Producer and filmmaker, Darius Clark Monroe, is the Director of the film.   The film is about choices that Darius made as a teenager and how his past did not dictate his future. The film also touches on labels that we put on ourselves and the labels that we allow society to put on ourselves and that some chose to own. It also talks about generation after generation repeating the same cycle and the importance of having a strong support system, in Darius case the support system was his family. Lucy

I recently saw the film Lucy, I would categorize it as an action movie.  The movie is about a woman that gets caught up in an underworld of smuggling drugs to different countries; the drugs are placed inside the carriers abdomen.  The actors in the movie includes actors Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman, two highly visible and creditable names.   I went to the movie expecting to see action and film quality similar to The Matrix, NOT!

This was one of the worst movies I have ever seen, it is worse than the movie To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and I didn’t think anything could be worse than that movie. In my opinion, the movie did not have a plot or any form of substance.

On a scale of 1-5 (5 being must see), I give it a 0!

Half of a Yellow Sun

Recently I saw the movie ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ which follows twin girls from a wealthy Nigerian family and their path in life, each going down a different path based on the choices they made. The sisters relationship is tested by deceit, heartache, and socioeconomic differences. Intertwined in the movie is the bloody and violent war to bring independent republic to Nigeria.

My brief synopsis of the movie does not do it justice.  Watching the movie you feel the pain not only of the sisters, but of their loved ones in the movie and the persons that are killed viciously as a result of the war.  In this movie you also see the strength and resilience of people during a horrific time.   The movie is based on of the novel written by Nigerian born Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.  After seeing the movie, I am curious to know how the movie aligns with the book so I am adding this to list of books to read in the near future. Amelia’s Tea and Holly (Tea House)

I had the opportunity to travel to Mullica Hill, NJ for an afternoon of tea at Amelia’s Teas and Holly with 2 good friends.   The women that work here greet you with warmth, love, pride and genuine hospitality. The tea house is in a house that has been converted into a tea house with several rooms that are used to display merchandise, seat guest, and the preparation of tea and food.

There are 3 adult menus to select from and 1 child menu, all reasonably priced. The 3 adult menus provide an option of how much you want to partake in. We each selected the Queen’s Tea menu which gave each of us assorted tea sandwiches, delicious freshly baked scone, soup, mini quiche, mini sweets, and tea of your selection.  Everything was delicious and more than enough food for the minimal cost.

Why Now?

Over the years I have kept various journals; logging my joys, pains, regrets and triumphs.  Through those journal entries I found peace, I saw the progression of my inner strength starting to bloom each time God granted me with the strength to overcome and lastly I started to realize that regardless of the situation I will be okay.

Over the years…people saw gifts in me that I hadn’t yet seen in myself:

  • My love always tells me that I have a creative energy in me that is yet untapped
  • Friends have spoken into my life that I have a gift of providing guidance
  • My mentor spoke into my life that I have testimony that one day she hopes that I will share with others
  • My love of all things food, travel and style should be shared

I am not perfect and yes I still have things that I am working through however I am at a place where I am comfortable enough in my own skin to share my opinions, views, likes, and dislikes with the world.  So I am ready to sincerely and unapologetically share a little of me with you!
