The next time you are in Washington, DC you have to visit The Pig. Can you guess that this menu is filled with all things pork, yes it serves other dishes besides pork but why would you visit a restaurant named The Pig to have something other than pork! Prior to my visit to DC I researched restaurants that I wanted to visit via Yelp and this place was at the top of my list. On Fridays they offer 3 courses for $15 lunch option in addition to their regular lunch menu. The price fix lunch is a set 3 courses, no menu options to select from. One word to describe the service, quality of dinning, and overall experience…..excellent!
During my lunchtime visit I partook in the price fix option; excellent choice if I do say so myself! The starter was an arugula salad topped with smoked blue cheese, dried cherries and walnuts, the next course was a Muffuletta sandwich accompanied with homemade chips, and the finally of the meal was a caramelized peach accompanied with vanilla ice cream topped with pistachios for dessert. Each course had unique yet simplistic creativity to it. To accompany my meal I ordered a moroccan mint sweet tea which is sweetened with simple syrup; so delicious I drank two.
As I was leaving, I couldn’t resist the desire to order a dish to go – nothing to big but just something to remember this nod to the pig. I ordered an appetizer, face bacon, to go. I asked the waiter what it was, she told it was the skin from the pigs face….yes I should have known that by the name but ummmm…. I asked anyway. Directly after my meal I was driving back to PA so I asked her to put the mustard and syrup that it is served with it on the side. Well, I would love to say that it made it back to PA in one piece but it didn’t…. about 2 hours into my drive home, I stopped at a rest stop to sample it. The face bacon was room temperature at this point but it was still delicious.
I am looking forward to my next trip to DC and more specifically The Pig so I can try their Farm Tasting Menu that is offered for dinner on Thursdays and Fridays for $35.
The Pig is part of Eat Well DC which is a synergy of restaurants, farmers and others concerned with our planet. Many of the vegetables and fruits served in these restaurants are grown in their farms which reduces cost and supports the local economy. The next time you are in the DC area, I would encourage you to support one of the Eat Well DC establishments.
