The Wizard of Oz is one my favorite childhood movies, I looked forward to watching it every year around Thanksgiving. I loved how at the end Dorothy and Toto were reunited with their family and that her 3 travel companions had their wishes granted by the Great Oz. As a child that was all that I saw, nothing beyond the surface of the storyline. But that changed when I watched it again, this time I was in my 30s.
Dorothy’s greatest wish was to be reunited with her family, that was all that she desired. She asked everyone in Oz for help, she even traveled miles to ask the Great Oz to help her get home. What I realized after watching the movie later in life was that the power to get home was always with Dorothy, she had the choice to either stay asleep or wake-up. That is much like us, we have the power to achieve our heart’s desires but we look externally to achieve our desires rather than looking within.
How many times have you looked externally for guidance or to solve a problem when all along the answer was within; I know I have done this more times than I care to count. Rather than having confidence in the wisdom that God instilled in me, I instead sought outside counsel when all along I had the answer. I was once a person very similar to Dorothy, I was sleeping through my life and looking to others to make my desires a reality.
The solution to reaching my heart’s desires lies within me, I don’t need to look externally and neither do you. I now look at the Wizard of Oz with new eyes, I know the outcome in the movie will not change but it serves as a reminder that what I want is always within and for me to wake-up and seize it!
