The Dates is one of those books that makes me self-reflect, ponder many questions and how I would react to a certain situations. The book is over 400 pages however I would encourage you to not let that deter you from reading it. It is a novel that is very loosely based on an experience that the author had. The Dates deals with choices that we make, chance encounters, focusing your energy on what matters to you, your life’s legacy, and the impact that we unknowingly have on others. Continue reading

Evolution of a Criminal
Today I had the opportunity to view the documentary ‘Evolution of a Criminal’; a powerful message of moving beyond your past. The 3rd Annual Black Star Film Festival in Philadelphia presented this film which included a Q&A with the author. Spike Lee is the Executive Producer and filmmaker, Darius Clark Monroe, is the Director of the film. The film is about choices that Darius made as a teenager and how his past did not dictate his future. The film also touches on labels that we put on ourselves and the labels that we allow society to put on ourselves and that some chose to own. It also talks about generation after generation repeating the same cycle and the importance of having a strong support system, in Darius case the support system was his family. Continue reading
Lucy
I recently saw the film Lucy, I would categorize it as an action movie. The movie is about a woman that gets caught up in an underworld of smuggling drugs to different countries; the drugs are placed inside the carriers abdomen. The actors in the movie includes actors Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman, two highly visible and creditable names. I went to the movie expecting to see action and film quality similar to The Matrix, NOT!
This was one of the worst movies I have ever seen, it is worse than the movie To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and I didn’t think anything could be worse than that movie. In my opinion, the movie did not have a plot or any form of substance.
On a scale of 1-5 (5 being must see), I give it a 0!
Half of a Yellow Sun
Recently I saw the movie ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ which follows twin girls from a wealthy Nigerian family and their path in life, each going down a different path based on the choices they made. The sisters relationship is tested by deceit, heartache, and socioeconomic differences. Intertwined in the movie is the bloody and violent war to bring independent republic to Nigeria.
My brief synopsis of the movie does not do it justice. Watching the movie you feel the pain not only of the sisters, but of their loved ones in the movie and the persons that are killed viciously as a result of the war. In this movie you also see the strength and resilience of people during a horrific time. The movie is based on of the novel written by Nigerian born Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. After seeing the movie, I am curious to know how the movie aligns with the book so I am adding this to list of books to read in the near future. Continue reading
